Let me tell you about my new best friend. His name is Benjamin. He's homeless. My roommates and I became friends with him after one of them saw him freezing and came home and told us, and then we thought that taking him soup, a blanket, and oh yes, A Book of Mormon (thank you grandpa sorensen for making me think you take a BOM to every stranger). Well as we got to know him, we discovered that he would give us something that is more important than soup...he taught us about how to really love someone. Ben said he thought God forgot about him, but he decided to pray all day that someone would bring him soup..and there we were. Well, he was an answer to our prayers more than anything. One night, we are sitting here with Benjamin reading about King Benjamin in the book of Mosiah. And, well, it's getting late and pretty dang cold, and all Ben could do was ask us if were too cold or apologize for not being a better host.He then asked if he could say a prayer for us. Pleasantly surprised we said of course...he offered, I am serious, a good 8 minute prayer. ALL of it was offered on our behalf. Until the end, where he just started crying to the Lord about how he was so afraid for us to be gone, because he would be so alone and the demons were going to come after him. Wow...I haven't cried that much in a really long time. He prayed that we would be warm and how much he loved us. I felt guilty the whole time as I walked home...I have never learned so much in such a short time from a complete stranger, that may I suggest many of us (including me) would probably assume contribute "nothing to society". How could a man who has so little and is so "low" in this world only speak of us, who have every necessity for survivial AND happiness. Well, the weather has gotten bad, and my friend has disappered. We have found out that he has been in the ER twice and arrested once since our last visit with him on Monday night. I don't know if Ben will make it thru another winter, and I keep asking Heavenly Father why I can't find him..well maybe I learned what I was supposed to and soon Ben will be able to be embraced in heaven's warmth. Whatever happens, I'm glad I met this amazing beautiful humble man.
Well in Wicked, Glenda said it best:
I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
Because I knew you...
BENJAMIN....WE LOVE YOU!!!!!
For everyone else, just remember, the Savior said to serve. I don't feel like I offer people much, but LOVE is all that really matters.
Sorry this is so long, will not be a habit, but this needed to be said!! CHARITY NEVER FAILETH!!!
Let's be the Christians we proclaim to be and truly let our walk and talk be LOVE!!! Satan is against all of us...can't we all join together against him and help each other out instead of bickering.
Just remember as you put your head onto a pillow in a bed with heat and your stomach is full and you have someone to talk to and your Book of Mormon sits on the bedstand...just remember that these are blessings that not everyone has.
Oh, and one more important thing...just don't forget who you are and that God loves you...that's all. We saw Ben thru God's eyes...that was the greatest blessing. I know that he has made some mistakes, he used to be a BYU athlete, RM, very attractive, talented, good family...and well now he lives on the street...but let me tell you that when I'm with him all I can think is you poor soul, you must be hurting so much inside and you are so loved you just can't see it. How many mistakes have I made and yet, I still have every blessing imaginable.
